Welcome to Part III of our Irwin Farmhouse before and after! If you haven’t seen Part I (kitchen, living room, sunroom and laundry room) and Part II (hall bath, guest room and kids’ rooms) be sure to check those out! We shared our vision for the whole house and the scope of our renovation in Part I, and this blog is the conclusion to the renovation story.

We designed the master suite with the same modern farmhouse aesthetic as the rest of the house. Our goal was cohesiveness without each room feeling like a carbon copy of the others.

When we found our house, the owner was using the original garage as a large craft and sewing room. Somewhere along the way the garage had been converted to part of the main house. The addition consisted of a hallway off the living room, a powder bath, and one large open room with two closets.

We loved the abundance of usable space, but our family really needed another bedroom in lieu of a common area or sewing studio. Once we took out the walls dividing the main area, hallway, and powder bath, we had the room to dream up our own ideal master suite.

The master bathroom needed to be located near the laundry room and powder bath in order to access the existing plumbing. Our “want list” for the bathroom included a separate shower and freestanding bathtub, double vanity, enclosed water closet, and closet access from the bathroom instead of the bedroom. The shiplap-wrapped storage nook came about as a way to make the awkward space between the bathtub and the wall functional and aesthetically-pleasing.

Once again, we kept with our preferred color palette of soft neutrals with warm wood tones. In both the bathroom and bedroom we added striking contrast with some darker elements. The black granite in the bathroom and dark gray walls in the bedroom add a bit of drama and interest.

Kelley dreamed of double doors for the closet, but we had a difficult time sourcing them. We ended up buying pine bifold closet doors and modifying them for the closet and laundry room (see Part I) to get the exact size and style we wanted.

While we chose some modern accents like the clean lines on the vanity lights, thin metal-framed mirrors, and tub filler, it was important to us to stick to some classic farmhouse elements like shiplap and subway tile. However, we did use a 4×16 subway in gray instead of white. The white marbled hexagon tile on the floor is a different color of the tile we chose for the hall bath.

In the master bedroom, we closed off the exterior door and window on one of the walls in order to have space for the bed. The painted brick backside of the fireplace felt completely out of place. We considered covering it with drywall, but ultimately decided to turn it into a faux fireplace so it would feel purposeful  in the room. We poured a small concrete hearth to coordinate with the hearth in the living room, and installed a matching mantel. This ended up being one of our favorite features in the master suite! It makes the room feel like a cozy retreat. We intended to fill the “fire box” opening we cut into the brick with wood slices, but once the brick was exposed Kelley fell in love with the look and we never installed the wood.

We brought our two boys over to “help” us demo some of the walls in the master suite. They feel so invested in this part of the house! They also helped us make the barn door for the master bathroom.
