Fresh Thyme Master Bathroom

BEFOREAFTER

INTRO

Some renovations are about more than just updating a space—they’re about reimagining how a home can better serve its owners, both now and in the future. This master bathroom transformation is a perfect example. Our clients wanted a spa-like retreat that not only elevated the look and feel of their home but also incorporated thoughtful design choices to ensure comfort and accessibility for years to come.

With custom finishes that reflect their personal style, this renovation is all about blending elegance with practicality. Every detail, from the soft, warm tile selections to the perfectly coordinated vanity color inspired by art from their travels, was chosen to create a space that feels luxurious yet timeless. Let’s take a closer look at how we brought their vision to life!

BEFORE

Our clients loved their home but recognized that their master bathroom needed a refresh. The existing space felt cramped, with a large garden tub dominating the room and a vanity that lacked efficient storage. While the layout worked, the finishes were outdated, and the lighting didn’t create the bright, inviting feel they wanted.

Additionally, they were looking ahead to the future, prioritizing accessibility features such as a wider entry door and an improved layout that would make aging in place easier. Their goal was a bathroom that was both beautiful and practical.

When we asked our lovely clients what the space was like before, and what was working for them and what wasn’t, here’s what they shared:

The master bath was very dated. The house was built in 1989, and the only the floor tile and hardware had been updated in the bathroom. The shower leaked, and could be seen in the damaged sheetrock by the shower door. The large jacuzzi bathtub had a crack in it. One of the previous owners had spray painted the frame of the shower, and some of it had peeled off. The interior of the shower was very discolored, and all attempts at cleaning it were futile. The door leading from the master bedroom into the bathroom was a very narrow 24 inches. After a friend visited that was in a wheelchair, we decided that doorway also needed to be widened. As far as what worked for us in the bathroom, we were fine with the floor plan itself. The location of the shower, tub area, vanity, and closets were ok with us.”

With a clear vision for their dream master bathroom, we were excited to transform this space! Choosing the right team for the job is never easy, and we were honored when our clients shared their reasons for selecting Irwin Construction:

We had heard of the amazing quality of the work of Irwin Construction. We also know Jeremy, and what a man of integrity he is. We trusted him and the men he chose to work for him.”

DURING

Creating a space that feels like a retreat starts with thoughtful design, and for our clients, that meant improving both accessibility and functionality while bringing in fresh, timeless beauty. To open up the space, we installed a 30” pocket door between the bedroom and bathroom, making entry easier and more comfortable. The plumbing was adjusted to accommodate a stunning freestanding tub with a wall-mounted tub filler, instantly making the room feel more spacious. We also relocated the toilet and modified the flange to fit a 10” offset elongated toilet, adding both comfort and convenience.

The shower was one of the biggest transformations. We built a custom shower pan and incorporated a shampoo niche for extra storage. When it came time to make the tile selections, the intentions were to be warm, yet bright and airy. We didn’t want a lot of contrast between them, but wanted just enough variance between tile selections to keep the bathroom interesting. With that in mind, we chose these stunning options. The walls were wrapped in Crossville Velvet White 4×24 tiles with soft Ash grout, giving the space a warm yet airy feel, while the shower floor featured Touch Tile Mini Hex Calacatta Gold for just the right amount of contrast and texture. To complete the look, we installed a frameless shower glass enclosure with a hinged door and a pony wall panel, making the entire shower feel open and seamless.

One of our favorite details in this project was the vanity. Inspired by artwork our clients brought home from Italy, we designed a custom Shaker-style double vanity in Sherwin Williams Dried Thyme—a soft, rich green that brings so much depth and character. To pull everything together, we selected MSI Calacatta Idillio Quartz for the countertop, vanity backsplash, window sill, shower curb, shampoo niche ledge, and pony wall cap. The end result? A space that feels effortlessly elegant and beautifully cohesive. And though the vanity stayed in the same footprint, the storage configuration was better than their previous vanity, which makes them feel like they have a lot more space!

The final touches made all the difference. We brightened up the space with six LED recessed can lights, creating an inviting and airy ambiance. For the flooring, we installed Crossville Velvet White 12×24 Almond tiles in a classic lay pattern with Warm Gray grout—seamlessly blending with the shower and vanity selections. The walls were painted in Sherwin Williams Amazing Gray, with crisp Pure White trim for a soft, neutral backdrop. And to bring it all together, we installed new cabinet hardware, mirror, vanity lights, and other fixtures, making sure every detail felt polished and intentional.

And the biggest change of all according to our client:

Everything about the bathroom!! The shower, the vanity, the bathtub, the floor, all of the tile! The color of the walls, and the trim! It looks so fresh and new.”

AFTER

The transformation is nothing short of stunning. By reconfiguring elements within the same footprint, we created a master bathroom that feels significantly more open, functional, and luxurious.

Our client’s favorite selection in their stunning bathroom just so happened to be:

“The tile in the shower. The wall tile, floor tile, and the quartz from the countertop that they used on the step into the shower and in the shampoo niche.”

Swapping out the oversized garden tub for a sleek freestanding bathtub allowed for more floor space, making the entire room feel larger. The custom vanity not only adds a personalized touch but also vastly improves storage efficiency. The carefully chosen tile selections offer subtle contrast while maintaining a cohesive, warm aesthetic.

Most importantly, the updates align with our clients’ long-term needs, providing a space that is as practical as it is beautiful. Their vision for a timeless, spa-like retreat has come to life, and we couldn’t be happier with the results!

Our clients LOVED the end result of their beautiful space and had this to say about our design and work:

“We could not be happier about our master bathroom renovation! Our bathroom is so beautiful now! I am so appreciative of all of the guys hard work, and Kelley’s help in picking out the colors, tile, hardware, etc. We could not have done that on our own. We also need to mention the hard work of the plumber. He found a number of drain leaks under our foundation that he fixed for us in the process. Just knowing that things were fixed and done right gives us so much peace of mind. Another thing I need to mention is the fact that every one of the workers that came to our home we felt we could trust. They all took great care of our home, and worked very hard on our behalf. We are very grateful! “
