The Black & White Vintage-Inspired Bathroom project was special to us, as it was a long-awaited project for dear friends. Their Denton, TX home was built in 1979, and the master bathroom had been at the top of their “to tackle” list since purchasing the house a few years ago. The bathroom was dated and seemed drab to them. We were honored to help them liven up the space!
The space was small and out of style, so our goals were to create a bathroom that felt bigger (yet stick to the same footprint and layout to keep project costs reasonable) and update all surfaces to reflect our friends’ design style. Baths are an important relaxation method in this home, so we also hoped to find an alcove bathtub deep enough for a REAL bath!

When asked what the bathroom was like before, our client responded that it was old, impossible to keep clean, and the “bane of her existence”. The all-beige space wasn’t the relaxing oasis she hoped for in a master bathroom. She particularly loves baths, and commented that she felt like she was sitting in a kiddie pool in the shallow garden tub.

Our friends love the modern-retro design, so we selected glossy square tiles for the shower as a nod to this design. Clean geometric lines on every surface and a stark black and white color palette helped achieve a modern vibe. We brought in a bit of unexpected texture with a leathered finish on the granite countertop. In order to keep the neutral palette from feeling too harsh and sterile, we added knotty alder floating shelves custom-made by Drakestone Designs for storage above the toilet. Our friends also found a fabulous Aztec-print runner with the tiniest splash of rose to bring a bit of color into the mix.
Due to space constraints, our renovation plan included a combined bathtub and shower. However, one of our top objectives for the project was to find a 5-foot alcove bathtub that was deep enough for a real soak. We found a winner with the Signature Hardware Rolf Alcove Tub. The clean lines contributed to the sleek, modern look that our friends wanted in the bathroom.
