Charcoal+Navy House
INTRO
Great to see you back on our blog! Today we are showcasing our latest full house project, the Charcoal+Navy House. We often say our goal is to give our clients the space of their dreams – and we feel like we truly achieved that goal with this renovation!
Our client had dreamed of what her house could be for years, and she was finally ready to take the step forward to make this space feel like her home.
BEFORE
The Charcoal+Navyhouse is 20 years old, was originally constructed with builder-grade materials, and had largely not been renovated. The master bathroom was undersized for the overall square footage of the home, and offered an inefficient layout. The design was outdated and the space didn’t serve our client’s needs well. Knowing that this project would be a large and risky undertaking for her, our client wanted to be certain that she was partnering with the right renovation team:
“Irwin was recommended to me by a trusted architect. They were responsive, reasonably priced and demonstrated the knowledge and skills to deliver high quality work.”
We took this request very seriously and put our utmost effort into transforming this house into the home of our client’s dreams!
DURING
Our client leans toward a more modern design in cool tones, so we let this style inspiration shape our vision for this project. The color palette we worked with included white, charcoal, and navy with lots of texture in the tile. We used LVP flooring to bring some warmth to the design and keep it from feeling too cold. The focal areas of renovation in this large space were the kitchen, master bathroom, and the upstairs hall bathroom.
Kitchen
The original kitchen was separated by a wall from the main living space, and featured a lot of tans and browns. We began by removing the wall between the kitchen and living room to make the two spaces feel more connected. We then added a huge island to the kitchen and replaced all of the countertops with Vicostone Luna Plena quartz. The backsplash and flooring were replaced with more modern materials and we repainted the ceiling, walls, trim, and cabinetry to fit our client’s color palette. We updated the lighting by installing recessed LED can lights and two pendant lights over the island. Furthermore, we installed both under cabinet lights as well as in-cabinet lighting for the upper glass-panel cabinets.
The living room and staircase received a facelift as well. We refaced the living room fireplace tile with an edgy, modern black ledger stone and installed a new mantle to complement the flooring. Wood treads replaced the previous carpet on the stairs, and we stained these treads and a new handrail to match the flooring.
The white, charcoal, and navy color scheme combined with new materials and lighting took what was once a bland, lifeless kitchen and living room and turned it into a modern, chic, and timeless space.
Master Bathroom
Our main purpose for the master bathroom was to increase functionality and provide more room for our client’s daily activities. We took in the space from the previous master closet to be part of the master bathroom and installed a spa-like bathtub inside a huge shower, creating a walk-in wet room. This luxury feature elevated the bathroom to spa-like proportions! The previous office space became a large dressing room, the perfect finishing touch to our client’s upgraded master suite. Another custom feature in this master bath was the linen tower tucked into the unused space behind the bathroom door. We updated the lighting by installing recessed LED can lights in the bathroom and closet, and vanity sconces for added vanity lighting. The bathroom window was replaced with a tempered rain glass window to bring in natural light while also providing privacy for our client. All flooring and wall tile were replaced and we repainted the ceiling, trim, door, and cabinetry.
Upstairs Hall Bathroom
This bathroom underwent a facelift similar to the master bath. We completely demoed this bathroom and installed a custom Shaker-style single vanity. We installed a quartz countertop to match the master bathroom. A new, acrylic bathtub was installed and paired with a shampoo niche for extra toiletry storage. The previous tile was replaced, as was the flooring. We repainted the ceiling, trim, doors, and walls. We topped off this space by updating the lighting, installing recessed LED can lights into the ceiling and a vanity sconce above the mirror. Our focal colors for this room were white and charcoal, which really elevated this space into a timeless guest bath.
AFTER
This was a large project and the pressure was on to deliver a transformation that would live up to our client’s vision. In the end, everything came together to create a beautiful home our client can enjoy for years to come. When asked about the biggest change in her space, our client replied:,
“[There were] two – the kitchen / first floor transformation and the master bath / closet, only the before and after photos could even begin to demonstrate the changes.”
And we couldn’t agree more. The before and after layouts are as different as night and day in the best way. We are incredibly proud of this project!
