Today on our before and after blog series we’re taking a look at our Garagemahal Family Addition project. This addition focuses on getting some much-needed extra space for a growing family!

With interest rates and real estate prices where they are, we’re finding more and more families in our area exploring the idea of adding on to their existing home instead of purchasing a larger house. The Garagemahal Family Addition project achieved that exact goal by building out the space over a garage and shop to expand the family’s living space.

This new addition was designed to fulfill short-term and long-term family goals. It features a two-car garage and shop below, along with ample living space above, offering versatile usage options.

While the addition is initially for extra recreation space for the family, our design anticipates future conversion potential. We kept the option open for a full apartment in the future by taking into consideration the placement of plumbing and electrical needed to easily convert the kitchenette into a full kitchen and the hall closet into a laundry closet.

The final layout included a media/game room with a kitchenette, full bathroom, and spacious gym. Custom cabinets in the kitchenette were fabricated to feature everything needed for a snack bar – a built-in microwave, ice maker, and beverage fridge. Black-out curtains and a pull-down projector screen convert the game room into a theater. 

We finished out this space with durable LVP flooring, quartz countertops in the kitchenette and bathroom, Delta Champagne Bronze fixtures, and a soothing color palette of greens, blacks, and warm neutrals. 

This addition does a great job of multiplying the family living space while also providing options for future uses. Let us design a great space for your family, too!
