The Retro Green Bathroom was such a unique project for us because a top priority was to honor the age of the home and remain true to its roots as much as possible! The 1950’s home sits on the top of a hill and featured a pastel pink bathroom that was no longer functional for the homeowners.
See end of post for sources and materials.

Built in 1954, the bathroom boasted a charming seafoam toilet and pedestal sink, as well as iconic pastel pink tiles. Unfortunately, this was no longer practical or efficient and the bathroom had become unusable due to damage from a leak that had gone undetected for some time. The existing cabinets offered great storage, and the wood paneling around the room great texture, but the wood made the room feel dark.

From the homeowner: “This was a bathroom built in 1954, so our biggest priority was to maintain the original look/feel of the space while updating the fixtures and tile. We wanted the vanity height to be raised, and a more accessible shower.” Our goal was to update the fixtures and tile, so we had to source new materials that looked like they could have been original to the home. This proved to be no easy feat, but each material was carefully considered and meticulously selected, from the square tiles to the light fixture.

The first order of business was to remove the fur down in the shower to open it up. We updated all of the tile, fabricated new cabinet doors for the built-in, installed a new vanity and shower door, added much-needed lighting, and updated all of the fixtures. We contemplated leaving the wood paneling as is, but once the new tile was in, it still felt too dark so we opted to paint it and the built-ins white.

“Well, the room was gutted so there were many big changes, but the most obvious and rewarding was raising the ceiling in the shower. The lighting has made a huge difference, as well as the more convenient wall outlet. The updated cabinets have also improved the overall ease of use. The shower niche looks good and keeps things organized.”
