The Parquet Ranch project sits on a beautiful large lot in a hidden gem of a neighborhood. It’s near city amenities, but feels rural as trees hide it from the main road. The house itself was in fantastic shape, but didn’t fit our clients’ design taste. Built in the mid-1980s, many aspects of the house still felt tied to that decade. Our clients had dreams of creating a more open living space and revamping the surfaces of the home to reflect their mountain rustic style.

Before

This project earned the name “Parquet Ranch” because parquet wood floors dominated the majority of the house. A sunroom was attached to the kitchen and breakfast nook, and our clients wanted to take out the dividing wall to add that to the living room space. The living room already had high vaulted ceilings, but our clients saw opportunity to create a statement by resurfacing the fireplace and rebuilding the built-in shelving. Outdated tile was present throughout the kitchen, and our clients wanted to change the layout of the oven wall to incorporated more storage and a slide-in range.

The Process

We knocked out the wall between the kitchen and living room and one wall between the breakfast nook and living area to create one large open space. In fact, our clients took the first swing at the wall themselves! Beams were installed in the attic in place of the removed walls to carry the weight. At the peak of the living room, we installed a faux beam wrapped in cedar to draw the eye upward and increase the feeling of space. The fireplace was completely resurfaced with stacked stone, and our clients chose a stunning Eastern Cedar mantle and live-edge shelves as the focal point in the living room, tying in their mountain rustic style.

The parquet floors and previous tile and carpet were removed throughout the house and replaced with engineered hardwood flooring. We replaced all the interior doors with craftsman-style doors and the trim was updated to match. Recessed LED can lights were installed throughout the house. We find lighting to be one of the most important changes in every project!

The kitchen cabinets had already been painted, so we color-matched the new cabinetry we built for the oven wall. New marble counters were installed in the kitchen, along with a 3×6 tile backsplash laid in a herringbone pattern.

In the game room off the kitchen, we revamped the built-in with a custom made wine rack to match the new flooring. The powder bath in the game room also received a face lift with new tile, paint and counters.
