Our Transitional Bathroom project took place in a Corinth, TX home built in 1999. Our clients had already updated several other areas of the home and were anxious to tackle their master bathroom. Their design style is a transitional fusion of rustic, farmhouse, and traditional, and this called for a unique approach to bathroom design.
The goals for this project were to remove the built-in garden tub and side pony walls and replace it with a large freestanding tub, update the shower and bathroom floor tile, and give the vanities a facelift with new counters and fresh paint.

Our clients loved having a large bathtub, but the amount of space the built-in tub dominated made this large bathroom feel much smaller. The shower was a decent size, but the off-white cultured marble lent little style to the space. The vanities and tub deck were also topped with cultured marble and the floor was tiled in off-white squares, making the whole bathroom feel a bit bland.

Since a main goal was to bring much more interest to the bathroom design than the all-over cultured marble look, we opted for high contrast and lots of texture. Black honed granite, an unexpected texture for stone, was a striking choice against white cabinetry. We chose board and batten trim carpentry to wrap the walls behind the freestanding bathtub for a traditional touch and lots of interest. All three tile choices had a bit of movement and texture. Marble-look tile was chosen for the shower walls, a woodgrain hexagon in a warm taupe was installed on the shower floor, and porcelain tile with a hardwood look was the bathroom floor choice.
We installed shiplap behind the vanity mirrors to introduce more subtle texture to otherwise expansive walls. We also custom-made the dark walnut frames for the mirrors, tying in the warm wood tones in the floor tile. To top it all off, our clients found a fabulous chandelier to hang over the bathtub that merged sleek metal lines with rustic, playful wood accents – a perfect illustration of their style!

So pretty! What type of product did you use behind the tub for the board and batten so it wouldn’t rot if it got wet? Thank you!
From Irwin Construction- We use paint-grade primed pine and MDF for our board and batten, and the oil based paint gives it protection against humidity and minor splashes. If you’re considering a bathtub in a high-splash area, like a kids’ bathroom or an area where pets are bathed, we’d recommend tile instead!
