2026 Home Renovation Trends:
Design Ideas to Love, Mistakes to Avoid, and Smarter Remodel Planning
How We Evaluate Renovation Trends at Irwin Construction
Every new year brings fresh design ideas, but 2026 feels different.
At Irwin Construction, we don’t look at trends as what’s popular right now. We look at them through a more lasting lens:
- Will this still feel good to live with years from now?
- Will it make daily life easier, calmer, or more enjoyable?
- Will it hold up, both visually and functionally as families grow and routines change?
Homeowners (and our design-build team right alongside them) aren’t just chasing what’s new. We’re craving spaces that feel grounded, personal, and deeply functional. The goal isn’t trend-driven design, it’s thoughtful decision-making that stands the test of time. Choices we’ve seen work in real homes, for real families, long after construction is complete.
After more than a decade of designing and building homes across North Texas, we’ve seen which choices homeowners still love, and which ones create regret.
Below, we’re sharing our design-build team’s perspective on the renovation trends we hope to see more of in 2026, what we encourage homeowners to pause on, and how to approach your renovation in a way that still feels beautiful, comfortable, and intentional.

1. Spaces Designed for Real Life
One of the biggest shifts we’re seeing and celebrating is homeowners intentionally prioritizing function alongside beauty.
At Irwin Construction, we say often: your home should look beautiful, but it should also work beautifully for the way your family lives. A space that feels warm, lived-in, and easy to use every day.
During a recent kitchen scullery addition project, our client Sherry, captured this perfectly:
“I love having a home that makes people feel peaceful and calm… instead of cluttered and cramped. Now I feel like I finally have those spaces.”
And that is exactly our wish for every homeowner: A home that creates peace and supports your life instead of getting in the way of it.
What makes these spaces endure isn’t the features themselves, it’s the intention behind it.
Why This Trend Lasts in Real Homes
When a home is designed around how people actually live, it naturally becomes more flexible over time. Families change, schedules shift, and life evolves , but well-planned spaces continue to support those changes without needing constant updates. That’s why these designs age well in real homes: they reduce daily friction and adapt as routines change.
We’re not alone in seeing this shift. Across Texas, homeowners are increasingly prioritizing renovations that improve how their homes function day to day, not just how they look.
A recent Texas-focused remodeling trends article by Fin Home Contracting highlights flexible living spaces, storage improvements, and practical layout upgrades as some of the most common investments homeowners are making right now.
That mirrors what we see every day at Irwin Construction: families choosing renovations that support real routines, evolve with their needs, and continue to feel good long after construction is complete.
Functional Features We’re Seeing Homeowners Prioritize
Here are the functional features we hope to see even more of in 2026:
- Spaces dedicated to hobbies and creativity – music rooms, art studios, reading corners, home theaters, or a quiet work-from-home nook. The possibilities are endless! Check out our Designing for Hobbies Blog for more inspiration!
- Back kitchens & sculleries for additional prep space, hosting, and storage.
- Beverage zones – coffee stations, drink fridges, or refreshment areas that support daily rituals and entertaining
- Drop Zones that actually function as storage for backpacks, shoes, sports gear, dog leashes, etc.
- Charging drawers and appliance garages to keep clutter off the counters
- Large, multifunctional kitchen islands where homework, family time, holiday baking, and hosting all happen
- Appliance lift cabinets so mixers and blenders are accessible when you need them, and hidden when you don’t
- Functional vanity bathroom drawers (instead of fake ones) for real, usable storage
- Multi-generational living layouts that support long-term flexibility for your family
- Rich color palettes, whether that be wall paint, cabinets, or textiles. These tones make your house feel homey and more like you.
Instead of asking, “What’s trendy right now?” more homeowners are asking:
“What would make our daily life easier, calmer, and more enjoyable?”
And that’s exactly the kind of design we love to build, spaces that are thoughtfully planned, beautiful to look at, and genuinely shaped around the people who call them home.
2. Color, Texture, and Material Choices That Age Well
2026 is also shaping up to be a year of tile with personality, done in an elevated, timeless way.
Homeowners want spaces that feel interesting but peaceful, and the best way to achieve both is through texture, tone, and layering:
Here are some design elements that we’re loving:
- Handmade-look or artisan-inspired textures
- Layering 2–4 complementary tile types in one space
- Stone-inspired quartz with gentle movement
- Creating not only a color palette for a space, but also a texture palette
- Patterned bathroom tile that still feels classic
- Wallpaper accents to bring charm and character
- Checkerboard floors that adds a timeless staple back into spaces
- Deep, moody paint and tile colors – plum tones, rich browns, warm charcoals, earthy greens
Why Layered Color and Texture Outperform “Safe” Design
Color and texture can feel intimidating because homeowners worry about regret. What we’ve seen, however, is that spaces with depth tend to age better because they rely on material quality and composition, not trend-driven contrast. Neutral doesn’t have to mean flat, and bold doesn’t have to mean overwhelming. When color is layered thoughtfully and grounded in natural materials, it becomes part of the architecture of the home rather than a passing trend.
Irwin Construction Colors of the Year for 2026
RICH PLUM
Plum is a color we’re especially excited to see more of in 2026 not just for its beauty, but for what it represents. It’s rich without being heavy, expressive without feeling trendy, and grounded in warmth rather than contrast. Over the past year, we’ve had the privilege of working on a historic home renovation that has been deeply personal for the homeowner and for our team. As she designed this space as a reflection of her new beginnings and individual style, her color choices stood out in a meaningful way.
Her decision to use a rich plum tone, specifically Sherwin-Williams Blackberry (SW 7577), on the kitchen cabinetry, embodied everything we love about this color: confidence, depth, and intentionality. That choice, paired with the story behind it, inspired us to name plum one of our Irwin Construction Colors of the Year.
From glossy tile that adds depth in a bathroom, to cabinetry or accent walls that bring quiet drama and confidence into a space, plum has a way of feeling deeply personal. It pairs beautifully with warm woods, brass and bronze finishes, natural stone, and soft neutrals, making it incredibly versatile across kitchens, bathrooms, and living spaces.
What makes plum work so well long-term is its balance. In the right light, it reads almost like a neutral, yet it offers richness and character that white or gray simply can’t. When used intentionally, it creates rooms that feel layered, grounded, and uniquely tailored to the person living there. Exactly the kind of design that doesn’t just follow a trend, but tells a story.

OLIVE GREEN
Deep Olive is another color we see continuing well beyond 2026 because it brings warmth, character, and longevity into a space without overwhelming it. Olive green feels rooted and familiar, inspired by nature rather than trends, which is exactly why it works so well in real homes over time.
We’ve seen homeowners gravitate toward olive in beautifully intentional ways: glossy shower tile that adds richness without feeling heavy, cabinetry that grounds a kitchen or bath with subtle depth, and walls that bring a calm, nature-inspired warmth to everyday spaces. It’s a color that feels both classic and current. Bold enough to make a statement, yet soft enough to love for many years to come.
Olive green pairs effortlessly with warm wood tones, brass and bronze finishes, natural stone, and layered neutrals, making it incredibly versatile across kitchens, bathrooms, and living spaces. Because it sits comfortably between color and neutral, it adapts easily as furniture, lighting, and personal style evolve.
What makes olive such a strong long-term choice is its ability to create rooms that feel settled, collected, and personal rather than overly styled. It doesn’t demand attention, it invites you in. And that sense of ease and warmth is exactly the kind of timeless comfort we love helping our clients create.

COGNAC
Lastly in our colors of the year, we have chosen to highlight Cognac. In design, we think of cognac as a structural neutral: a tone that anchors a room the same way wood beams or stone floors do. It provides warmth and depth without competing with the rest of the space.
We see cognac working best when homeowners want richness without committing to bold color on walls or cabinets. Leather seating, stained wood tones, cabinetry accents, textiles, and layered furnishings in cognac hues add character while remaining flexible as styles evolve. When paired with brass or aged bronze finishes, the result feels intentional and elevated.
What makes cognac particularly durable in real homes is how forgiving it is. It wears well. It hides patina instead of highlighting any wear. And it complements both light and dark palettes, making it ideal for long-term living rather than short-term visual impact.
Cognac helps solve a common challenge some homeowners face:
“How do I add warmth and personality without regretting it later?”
Because this color it’s rooted in natural materials, wood, leather, metal, clay, cognac adapts as other elements change around it. This is exactly the kind of color choice we encourage: one that supports craftsmanship, enhances daily life, and still feels right years after the renovation is complete.

3. Quiet Luxury: Features That Improve Daily Life
The kind of “luxury” we’re most excited about in 2026 isn’t about showy finishes or trends that won’t age well. It’s the kind you feel in small, everyday moments, when your space works effortlessly, when routines feel smoother, and when comfort is built into the bones of the home.
These features continue to deliver value because they support daily life, not just first impressions.
These are the kinds of features we’re seeing more of in our projects, and would love to see continue:
- Luxury pantry cabinets – Swapping a standard pantry closet for a full-height pantry cabinet can completely change how a kitchen works. With custom pull-out shelves, interior drawers, and built-in spots for small appliances, you can see everything at a glance instead of digging through a dark closet. As we often tell clients, this is one of the simplest ways to gain storage and make your kitchen feel more open.
- Heated floors – Once you have them in a bathroom, it’s hard to imagine going back. They’re a comfort feature that feels like a true “treat yourself,” but they’re also incredibly practical on cold mornings.
- Tubs in the shower – For the right space and layout, placing a soaking tub inside a large shower area can feel both luxurious and efficient, one cohesive wet zone, and a layout that feels like a retreat.
- Custom cabinet detailing – From panel-ready appliances to trim details and interior organization, cabinetry is becoming more tailored to each family’s needs instead of off-the-shelf.
- Soaking tubs – Not just a design statement, but a real invitation to slow down. When paired with the right lighting and finishes, they turn a primary bathroom into a true getaway.
- Kitchen sink inserts – One of our favorite “quiet luxuries.” A sink cover or insert gives you usable counter space back when you’re prepping or hosting and, yes, helps hide dishes when life is busy.
Together, these kinds of features show where luxury is headed:
Less about impressing everyone who walks in, more about creating a home that genuinely supports how you live, from your morning coffee to your evening wind-down.
Renovation Trends We Encourage Homeowners to Pause On
Every trend has its moment, but not every trend belongs in a home meant to last. As a design-build team, we spend a lot of time helping homeowners navigate what will truly serve them long-term versus what may feel exciting now but frustrating later.
When evaluating any trend, we encourage homeowners to ask three questions:
- Does this support how we live today?
- Will it still feel good five or ten years from now?
- Is it flexible enough to adapt as our needs change?
Most renovation regret doesn’t come from making bold choices, it comes from making rushed ones.
We often meet homeowners after the fact, when finishes feel dated, layouts no longer work, or shortcuts start to show. These are the patterns we see most often, and what we recommend instead.
Here are a few things we’re encouraging homeowners to pause on in 2026, and what to consider instead.
1. Choosing Materials Only Because They’re Trending
It’s easy to get swept up in online trends, but a renovation quickly feels outdated when the finishes don’t reflect you or your lifestyle.
Instead: Choose elements that feel like they represent you, and build the design around them with intention. We love when clients bring a color they’re drawn to, a wallpaper they’ve fallen in love with, or a detail that feels personal. Those are the touches that make a renovation feel special, and help turn a house into a home.
2. All-White Everything Without Contrast
When every surface is white, spaces can start to feel flat or sterile.
Instead: You can keep a white base, then add contrast through textiles, textures and one or two grounded colors.
3. Choosing the Wrong Contractor for Your Renovation
Renovating your home is personal. You’re not just choosing finishes or layouts – you’re choosing the people who will be in your home, interacting with your family, and guiding decisions that affect your daily life long after construction is complete.
We hear it all the time: missed timelines, unclear pricing, poor communication, and contractors who disappear when things get complicated. And the truth is, the team you choose matters just as much as the design you choose.
That’s why we believe homeowners deserve more than a contractor who can simply “get the job done.” They deserve a team who can guide them through the process with clarity, honesty, and care.
Why the Right Renovation Team Matters as Much as the Design
At Irwin Construction, we are incredibly grateful that many of our clients come back to us for multiple projects. When we ask what made them choose us again, they often tell us the same things:
- They felt informed.
- They felt supported.
- They felt respected.
That trust is built through a clear, intentional process, one rooted in detailed planning, open communication, and transparency at every stage. We believe in setting realistic expectations, explaining decisions clearly, and staying present when questions or changes come up. Renovations rarely go exactly as planned, but how a team handles those moments makes all the difference.
Just as importantly, we take time to get to know the families behind each project. We care about how a renovation will function long after construction is complete, how it supports mornings, gatherings, quiet moments, and everyday life. We don’t just see a house evolving; we see the people inside it.
That’s why our clients often describe the process as personable and reassuring, not stressful or transactional. And it’s reflected in the way our business has grown:
- 🌟 5 – Star Google Reviews Rating, real client experiences
- 🏅 A+ Rating with the BBB – verified by the Better Business Bureau.
- ⭐ 5-Star Rating on Facebook
- 🏆 Multiple-year Best of Denton winner and finalist
- 💌 Client testimonials – See what our clients have to say
- ❤️ Our clients don’t just recommend us to friends, they call us back for their next project.
These aren’t achievements we set out to collect, they’re the result of showing up consistently, communicating clearly, and treating every home and family with care.

When you work with a contractor who values integrity, communication, and quality craftsmanship, you’re not just protecting your financial investment. You’re protecting your time, your peace of mind, and your trust.
And that, more than any trend, is what makes a renovation truly successful.
Our Best Preparation Advice for a Confident Renovation Decision
As you think ahead to your renovation, we encourage you to step back from the noise of trends and focus on what truly matters:
- Design for how you and your family actually live
- Choose materials and layouts that are built to last, not quick fixes that will need revisiting.
- Work with a team that values clear communication, thoughtful planning, and integrity at every step.
The most successful renovations aren’t defined by what’s popular in the moment. They’re defined by how they feel to live in year after year.
Trends will come and go. But a home designed with intention, and built with care, will always feel right.
At Irwin Construction, our role is to guide you through the renovation process with clarity, honesty, and confidence. To help you make decisions you’ll still feel good about long after construction is complete.
